Humanitarian Honored Forsyth County News October 3, 1997
Lauretta Dean saves lives on a regular basis. Veterinarians recently honored
the local wildlife rehabilitator for her work in helping needy hawks, owls,
armadillos, deer, beavers, possums - even squirrels. For her efforts, Dean
received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Greater Atlanta
Veterinary Medical Society on October 3.
Cumming veterinarian Mike
McLaughlin presented the award to Dean at a ceremony at Zoo Atlanta.
"When Lauretta comes into the office with a box, you're thinking
I wonder what's going to fly out of there?" McLaughlin said.
"We're trying to help her help animals and help people be educated.
She is really one of our shining stars."
Dean received a plaque and Zoo Atlanta adopted a bird in her honor.
McLaughlin said if someone calls about an injured squirrel in the middle
of the night, he knows Lauretta will go get the animal and nurse it back
to health.
"She is a great person," he said. "And she does everything
as far as wildlife rehabilitation goes with money out of her own pocket".
The GAVMS is a 300-member organization of veterinarians from 15 metro counties.
