Wellness Care

How will my pet benefit from a wellness plan?

A wellness exam evaluates your pet's overall health, and can detect problems before they turn into serious illness.

Pets age much faster than humans so it is important that they have regular exams. Twice a year wellness exams should start at age 6. Wellness exams are especially important for senior pets. Wellness exams and senior screening diagnostic testing can mean early detection of health problems associated with aging. A wellness exam can be performed even if your pet is not yet due his vaccinations.

During a wellness exam the veterinarian can, among other things, perform a complete physical examination, listen to the heart and lungs, discuss diet, changes in health or behavior, discuss heartworm, flea and parasite control, administer vaccines, monitor weight, examine the eyes, teeth and gums, check for ear problems or trouble hearing, or check for lumps or skin problems.

Based on the results of the physical examination, your vet may recommend further diagnostic tests, such as bloodwork, thyroid check, urinalysis, X-rays, or ECG to test heart function.

Be sure to tell your vet of any changes in your pet's health or behavior. What might seem like a small change could be an opportunity to allow early detection and treatment of any problems.

Wellness exams will help your pet live a longer and healthier life. Your vet can determine a wellness plan based on your pet's healthcare needs.
