Tips to Prepare Your Pet For a Visit to the VetThere are lots of sights, smells and sounds that can add stress to your pet while preparing for a visit to the vet. Sometimes it is the change in their routine, and if car rides are not something your pet is used to this can also present a challenge. Have some play time before the visit to release some energy and provide a positive experience. Always bring your dog on a leash for safety both outside and inside the clinic. Dogs that normally walk well off leash may become startled and run away or get injured. You may encounter other dogs in the lobby and a leash will help keep them safe. A leash will provide a sense of security and safety for your dog. They may associate it with going for a walk and it will be a more positive experience. Puppies or small dogs may prefer to be transported in a pet carrier. Always carry a cat in a crate or pet carrier. Cats are escape artists, and if frightened by sounds or seeing dogs in the clinic may escape and become lost or injured. When at the vet’s office, speak to your pet in calm tones and reassure them. Allow the veterinary staff to hold your pet, as they are trained to do it safely and it will help the pet develop a bond with them. Routine visits will help pets acclimate and get used to the facility. If you have a new vet, bring your pet for a visit just to say hello and get to know the staff. If the pet is boarding for the first time, “get acquainted” visits and a tour of the facility may be a good idea. Your pet will become familiar with it and learn that it is a safe place.
