Microchipping

"I am considering getting a microchip for my pet. How does it work to protect my pet if it is lost?"

A microchip is a safe, quick procedure that offers your dog or cat protection if lost or stolen. The chip is inserted under the skin through a syringe, and it lasts indefinitely. If your pet is found, shelters and veterinarians have scanners which will detect most brands of microchips.

Our hospital uses Avid® microchips. The microchip number is registered in the national data base once the pet owner mails in the registration papers with their address, phone number, and pet information. The registration fee is included with the price of the microchip. This database can be accessed by anyone scanning for a microchip so your pet can be returned to you.

In addition to a microchip, a pet should always have a collar on with a ID tag. The microchip is extra assurance that you will be reunited with your lost pet, in the event the collar is lost. A quick painless injection will provide a lifetime of protection for your pet.
