I have a cat that never goes outside or comes into contact with other cats. Is it necessary for her to go the vet?

Indoor cats should receive regular wellness exams. Even though they don't go outside. they can still develop health problems relating to:

  • The aging process, such as arthritis, kidney or liver disease, and heart disease.

  • Dental disease.

  • Thyroid function.

  • Urinary health.

  • Exposure to mosquitos. Unfortunately there is no treatment available for cats that get heartworms, so it is important for both indoor and outdoor cats to take monthly heartworm prevention.

  • Skin problems.

Your vet will perform a complete physical which can detect unknown problems early. A wellness exam can involve discussing diet, behavior, diagnostic workups, senior care, and parasite control. A checkup means early detection, treatment and management of any changes in your pet's health or behavior.

Vaccinations should also be considered, so your pet will be protected in case of escape or exposure to other animals. A rabies vaccine is required by Georgia law.

Your vet can tailor a health and vaccine protocol to your cat's needs. Wellness exams are good insurance for the health and long life of your cat.
